The early success of the App Store comes in spite of the cards being stacked against it: China Unicom was estimated to sell just 5,000 iPhones at launch, the hardware only offers 3G Internet connectivity, and App Store purchases require a credit card issued by a Chinese bank, which is not commonplace.

Among the apps that have found success in China are Sina.com, a Web portal that gives access to news updates and blogs; QQ, a popular instant messaging system; and Western software like the Command & Conquer game from Electronic Arts. For now, most applications are priced and detailed in English, but it hasn't prevented an estimated $1 million in legitimate iPhone application sales this year.

One of the biggest issues for the iPhone in China is the large black market from which unofficial handsets have been purchased. While official phones got off to a slow start, it is estimated that there are two million total iPhones in circulation in the nation, most of them "jailbroken." Those hacked phones can be used to run unauthorized code and pirate App Store software.

According to the Journal, most pirate Web sites have "detailed instructions" in Chinese, spelling out how to steal software and install on the iPhone. This is in contrast to the non-native language commonly found on the official App Store.

Even if its slow start for iPhone sales continues, Apple would still sell an estimated 550,000 handsets in its first year. Some expect the sales to pick up, though, once a new model with Wi-Fi is introduced. The feature was left out of the launch phone because the Chinese government temporarily banned the wireless standard. That ban was relaxed in May, after manufacturing of the new iPhone began, and carrier China Unicom hopes to have Wi-Fi in the next batch of phones intended for release by the end of the year.

So China Unicom wanted to capture users from the China Mobile by Apple iPhone, however, it is too late! More and more unauthorized iPhone from grey-market had been accepted by users because of the cheap price, even if the target customers whom can accept the price or like the iPhone very much want to buy it, they have purchased from all kinds of channels instead of this cooperation of Apple and China Unicom. Besides, many kinds of competitors of iPhone have been sold, such as Droid, Nokia 5800 and so on. They are much cheaper.
 
We still have hundreds of reasons to choose to use iPhone, such as the rapid CPU, the gravity induction system, the wonderful App Store, the cut Wi-Fi and so on, but iPhone has still a long and dark way to stagger in China.

The unauthorized iPhone users had to pay much money for repairing or changing fittings. So Apple think that it’s the time to sell authorized iPhone in China, a great country and huge market with millions of mobile smart phone users.

However, the iPhone’s situation of getting lukewarm reception in China puzzled the managers of Apple. They can’t understand why the iPhone is not popular such like in U.S or Japan. So the foreigner medias feel strange and use a word ”lukewarm” to describe the cold reception which is given to iPhone in China. The NBA's application will cost $39.99 and let users watch up to 40 live games per week via their smartphone, though local TV blackout rules will still apply. The app also has an option to watch some games on demand for up to two days later and comes with game alerts and live stats.
 
Currently there is not added benefit if customers are already subcribers to the NBA's League Pass TV package. But bundling the two is something the league is looking at for the future, said Bryan Perez, senior vice president and general manager of NBA Digital.
 
Besides the live streaming app, the NBA already has its Game Time and Game Time Lite apps on Apple's App Store, the Android Market, and BlackBerry App World. The Lite version is free and comes with scores, stats, standings, and team schedules. The $9.99 Game Time includes some on-demand video, game highlights, live game alerts, stats, and access to an NBA Twitter feed.

Apple's Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook said Wednesday that the company had caught up enough to fix shortages in "the vast majority of countries" by early October. But ramping up production unexpectedly caused a related shortage in iPhone parts.
 
During a conference call, one analyst wondered how Apple was feeling about entering the world's largest wireless market on Oct. 30, in the midst of those supply chain conditions.

ANSWER (Cook): I would have liked to have had more, honestly, because we were still short in some countries at quarter end.

Free iPhone Apps = Without money?

Do you feel unhappy if your Apps are free Apps? Everyone can download whenever and wherever, but you can’t obtain one cent. But now, this situation is changed.
 
October 14, Thursday, Apple Inc. said that it will make iPhone Apps developers offer their users the option to purchase additional function and modules within a free App on its App Store.
 
Apps developers said that they had received an e-mail from Apple, and they were allowed to “simplify your development by creating a single version of your App that uses in App Purchase to unlock additional functionality, eliminating the need to create Lite versions of your App”. It means that they can upload a free version of their App first and then they can obtain profit by the additional function and modules.
 
Developers said that this announcement helped them in two ways. First, it makes it much easier for them to make a business out of free Apps. It also helps clean up the App Store because it would make it less necessary to offer both a free “lite” version and a paid version of the same App.
 
But to all App developers, most of all, the beginners whom had to upload simple and free products which will cost them too much time, it is really a good news. To users of App, I believe that it will also be the good news. If you don’t mind using the junior version of Apps and receiving the message to make you pay for your updating, you can enjoy yourself and without any cost even 99 cent!

Report: Apple developing radio app for iPhone

Apple is allegedly building a new app for its iPhone and iPod Touch that will bring FM radio to the devices, according to a report on 9 to 5 Mac.

Citing anonymous sources, the Apple news site says the functionality of the application will be similar to what Apple built into the iPod Nano. That includes the ability to pause live FM transmissions and fast-forward when you resume playing.

 

According to 9 to 5 Mac, the delay in getting the app to market is Apple's decision to integrate it with the iTunes Store, which is built into the devices. With this integration, people will be able to tap on a song they hear on the radio and buy it through iTunes.

 

Of course, Apple wouldn't be the first company to offer some type of FM functionality on the iPhone. Applications like Wunder Radio have been around for over a year and enable people to stream Internet radio to their iPhone and iPod Touch.

 

The big advantage Apple would have is linking its application to the iTunes Store, which creates the potential for more revenue.

IPhone and AT&T, the cooperation without profit!

October 10 2009, there is an explosive news media exposure, that is, according to the research report which was from the famous research firm Yankee Group, AT&T have cooperated with Apple and provided services based on iPhone for a long time, however, it is not yet profitable now!

 

It is known that, AT&T has signed a contact with Apple’s iPhone, and this two-year exclusive agreement will expire in mid-2010, but now according to Yankee Group’s report, AT&T is still not profitable because of the high subsidies for iPhone.

 

The 3G version of iPhone which is launched by Apple in the last summer was sold in a low price which was only 199 U.S. dollars. So many analysts believed that AT&T had to pay for a signal iPhone at least 300 U.S. dollars.

 

Now the 3Gs version of iPhne will be sold in China and operated by China Unicom exclusively. The presold price is about 3100 Chinese Yuan (CNY) which is the same as 454 U.S. dollars (USD). Besides, you have to pay for at least 126 Chinese Yuan (CNY) each month as the necessary additive condition. So iPhone will be seemed as the luxury goods in China.
